This will be the first weekly update for what's going on in the Band Room at Northern High School. Here you should be able to find what the students are working on, updates on all events and any other news that you should know about.
First I want to acknowledge the students who made the All-County Band. This year Northern had 19 students make the All County Band, making up 40% of the band. These students started last week putting together a wonderful program. The All County Band Concert is this Thursday at 7:00 at Calvert High School. We hope that you can come out and join us for this event.
The after-school schedule for this week is as follows.
Here are some major dates to keep in mind for the future.
As we start to approach our first concert please make sure that your students concert attire is in order. For all performances, Northern Music students wear the “uniform” of professional musicians, Concert Dress Black, also called Dress Blacks, or simply Blacks.
What is Concert Dress Black?
First and foremost, it is completely black. Dress blacks are formal, classy, and elegant. Students are free to choose the components of their dress blacks within the following guidelines.
What is not Concert Dress Black?
Some hints on putting together your dress blacks
Well, it has arrived. After months of planning and preparation, the Marching Band season has come to a conclusion. While I am excited about what lies in front of us for the concert season, the competitive season will be missed. This was truly a season to remember and I have enjoyed every moment of it.
We do have one event remaining, the Pat Carpenter Holiday Parade in North Beach, MD. Rehearsals for this performance will take place on November 19th, 21st and December 3rd from 2:30 - 4:00.
The schedule for this week does not include marching band.
Your students were amazing this weekend! I hope that you enjoyed their performance as much as I did. While that might have brought a conclusion to our competitive season, we still have a few performances left. For certain, we have one scheduled football game left, with the possibility of one if not more playoff games. We do not travel to away games. We will only participate at Home Football Games for the playoffs. We will know more about the playoff schedule after this Friday night.
Our rehearsal schedule will lighten this week. We will have a music only rehearsal for the drumline, pit, and winds. The color guard has the afternoon off on Tuesday. We will be going over Stand Tunes for Friday night. That rehearsal will be from 2:30 – 4:00. There will be no rehearsal on Thursday of this week. Friday afternoon we will have rehearsal from 3:00 – 5:00 for a review of the show before the Halftime and post-game performance.
On Friday, a student from NHS will be putting together a video for a school project that he is working on. He would like to do a video montage of the of the band using a drone. Your student will be coming home with a permission slip on Tuesday allowing them to be video recorded.
As always thank you for your support,
I hope that everyone enjoyed the Saturday off and was able to charge their batteries for the week to come. There is a very big change to our schedule this week. We will not have rehearsal on Tuesday evening due to the 100% chance of rain. We will reschedule that rehearsal from 3 – 6 on Friday in the Stadium. If we have any parents who are available to help get the pit to the field on Friday afternoon that would be greatly appreciated. Our Thursday rehearsal will remain the same, from 4 – 7.
We will not have a tailgate on Saturday, please make sure that your student eats a good breakfast and packs a lunch for the ride to Baltimore. Students will be able to purchase concessions at the stadium. We will not be stopping on the way home.
I am extremely excited about the bands performance this Saturday and hope that everyone of our supporters will be in the stands! If you are in need of tickets, you can get them at a discounted rate while they last through the band boosters.
Maryland State Championship Competition 2019
Wow, what a Saturday! To paraphrase one of our boosters, “so many great memories were made (and captured) this weekend”. The Patriot Classic was truly a remarkable event. A very special thank you to Barbie Davis for chairing the Patriot Classic. Her leadership was outstanding! To all the volunteers throughout the day, thank you, a thousand times thank you. You helped to create a wonderful memory for all of the student’s high school experience. There are so many people to thank, please know that everyone who was a part of the Northern Band family this past Saturday needs to be commended for putting on a first-class event.
This week’s schedule will feel like a walk in the park compared to last week, but there is a slight change on Thursday due to the half day. Students will not be permitted to stay after school on Thursday and the start time of the rehearsal will be pushed back to accommodate getting to rehearsal.
I hope that everyone enjoyed Homecoming this past weekend and got rejuvenated for the week ahead. This Saturday we will be hosting the 24th Patriot Classic. This is a very anxious time for everyone as we want to show what an amazing place NHS is. We are still in need of volunteers to help with parking and band guides. If you know of some students who need service-learning hours, please point them in our direction.

The bands schedule will be as follows on Saturday.
The weather for Saturday looks great! The weather for Tuesday and Thursday looks grey. Please make sure to pack appropriately for our rehearsals. The next two Tuesdays (10/8 and 10/) we will be rehearsing on the main field and will want to take full advantage of the ability to use the stadium.
Looking forward to a great week!!!
What a great weekend!!! I hope that you enjoyed it has much as I did. We still have a lot of work left to do but I am excited about the possibilities as the band heads towards the Patriot Classic on October 12th, but first...
This is always a very exciting week for the students. This morning I was greeted by a clown, two eagles and Chewbacca, so as you can imagine the energy on campus is very high.
Our schedule will remain the same for Tuesday’s and Thursday’s rehearsal. Please note that the rehearsal is from 4 - 7, we still need to put things away after rehearsal. All students are expected to pitch in to help everyone get out as quickly as possible.
Our Friday schedule will be slightly different.
Thanks for the support,
